Final Assessed blog – Start of my open choice posts

As we are approaching the end of Living and Working on the Web module, this blog is the final stage of #UOSM2008 but it is certainly not the end of my blogging. Over the period of this module I have learned the importance of professional online presence and blogging, therefore I am going to continue contributing to the effective online society, and take this experience forward in my study life as well as my career life in the future by joining university students group for exchanging knowledge, and following companies for getting recruited.

Reflecting over my very first blog about digital visitor and digital residents, even though despite that I didn’t have any account on LinkedIn or Twitter, I had a strong believe on myself being a resident, only because I was using Facebook. Coming across the entire topics especially topic three “Building Online Professional Profile” I have now understood how little of a resident I was.

Doing my research on topic three and reading other students blog I went forward on building my LinkedIn professional online profile. I achieved this by presenting my whole up to date academic credentials, work experiences and achievements, as well as following colleagues & classmates and interested companies such as JPMorgan, IBM, Apple, etc.

As a result of building my professional online profile, very surprisingly it attracted companies that I was following to view my profile, and I received this email from Expedia.

I was amazed by the power of social media, because in the past years that I wasn’t registered on LinkedIn, I got tired of applying for internships and other IT related jobs but non of my applications become successful. However now despite that it is only three months that I have had a LinkedIn profile, Expedia has invited me for an interview and hopefully I get the job.

From now onward I will keep improving my employability by keeping my online presence professional and improving my online profile so that it reflects up to date information. I will also continue following companies, this will allow me to be informed of the newsletters of all my interested companies, which is a perfect way to find out about them and be well aware of expertise needed to be employed by a specific company. This will help me gain a huge success in my career life.

This module inspired me to make changes to my world of technology by blogging and spreading the knowledge. My aim for the future is to take blogging forward and enhance my programming skills so that others can learn from it and comment back to me for more improvements. These activities will explicate how passionate I am about my field of interest, and it is an excellent technique to make me stand out from the crowd when it comes to job-hunting in the future.

I finally understood the effect of social media especially Twitter. Before this module I wasn’t using it, however now I am using it to learn and make tweets on everything shared by the interested companies and my friends.

Topic 5: Reflective Summary of Open Access

Topic 5 was the more outstanding topic that all students wanted to discuss. I am saying outstanding because the issue of open access was something that students maybe faced everyday when they tried to access some of the academic materials that they needed. I personally found it really frustrating whenever I wasn’t authorized to access journal articles for free. I was not alone to share my frustration about producers not let us access their materials for free. Reading other students blog, they also had similar arguments as me about advantages of free access. Andrew stated that “Open access allows everyone the ethical right and equal access to the latest expert knowledge, and it saves organisations like universities millions of pounds”. However when I looked at the argument from the producers point of view, end of the day their materials should pay them back as they have spend their time and money producing, and providing them to the world for free is just not logical.

Reading other contributors blog really broaden my knowledge about advantages and disadvantages of producers make their materials freely available. The advantages I bulleted on my blog was directly focused to the producers, while Andrew also listed some really interesting advantages, however it was not convicting for me, because I couldn’t see how it might benefit personally the producers.

I also came across a really interesting blog from May. I agreed with her that free access open huge opportunely for everyone especially for us students to stay updated with knowledge and information, however it concerned me because producers cant keep producing and making it available for us for free as it cost them. This will affect quantity and quality of information in the feature, which is a big disadvantage for everyone on the other hand.

How do producers benefit from providing their materials widely and freely available?

Information is a kind of product that we only get convinced to pay for it once we read it fully, so that we make sure it contains what we are after. However when we are authorized to have access for reading it, then we won’t pay for it because we already read it and are not needed anymore [1]. This uncertainty has become the reason for most of the information to be available free until now, because producers think that there are at least some advantages on allowing access to materials for free than keeping them behind the payment walls and nobody ever buy them because of not being sure what they contains.

Advantages

  • As we learned in this course posting materials online build a good image of the producer which links to developing online professional profiles, hens it is best for recruits.
  • Improves popularity and online presence
  • Open access to online journals allows students and educational organisations to build knowledge from it. Many have produced other knowledgeable materials, referencing books and journals [2].
  • It helps people sharing it; think scientifically which reflect back to improvement of the original producers through comments and feedbacks.

Disadvantages

  • Perhaps the biggest disadvantage of open access that all of us can spot straight away is, no money income for the producers from the produced materials.
  • It makes people lazy they stop being creative, and they totally relay on online journal articles because they can all be accessed for free, which in most cases it become breach of copyright act. I personally have witnessed lots of student at university and at college have become accused of plagiarism.
  • How open should it be who and which part of the world should have access to it, these are all controlling issues, which are hard to be established.
  • Because there will be no income, producers wont be able to continue publishing journal articles, which will lead the world suffering from the luck of knowledge and expertise [2].

As an example mentioned by Jonathan Eisen [3] that he was looking for a particular medical treatment and he paid for many articles, but he couldn’t find the right one, his time and money wasted for nothing and those papers also didn’t have returning policy. This problem makes people not pay for the journals because of uncertainty. I can think of one solution that all the produced materials should be bought by libraries and other educational organisations and be made available to the members.

Topic 4: Reflective Summary of Ethical Issues

I found topic 4 the most interesting topic because it was open to any ethical issue about the educational or business use of social media. After doing some research, the processing and selling of our data by social media organisations to the third party companies cought my attention to be discussed for topic 4. I found it interesting because although any social media that we use such as Facebook may state in their terms and condition but almost half of the users are not aware of their personal data being commercialised as no one bothers to read all those endless terms and conditions.

Reading others student also broaden my knowledge about other ethical issues. I found Bartosz’s blog similar to my topic as he was discussing how our data used by Massive Online Open Courses. It was surprising for me that despite I am a member of MOOC myself I never knew that they also make money from selling the data generated from activities of their members, which make them no different to what social media do to our data. I really liked his blog but I didn’t agree with him saying the effect of MOOC selling our data will put bad light on some users.  I didn’t agree because all online courses users profiles contains formal academic posts and activities that may not empress some employers for recruitment but it doesn’t put bad light on anyone.

Aliyu also made a really good post about issues of social media effect in the workplace. I liked his examples of some employees losing their jobs because of a small post. It concered me that while freedom of speech gives the right to everyone expressing their openions, then why the action of employers sacking thier emoloyees not considered to be agained the freedom of speech law and why are they not getting sued?

The Ethical issue of mass data gathering and targeted adverts

More than half of the social media users still have the question of what is the source of income for social media sites such as Facebook, which is especially popular among people? Surely we don’t pay monthly subscription for the social network sites we use or neither we make one off payment to them. So how do they benefit from us? Well the answer is that we don’t pay by debit card or money in cash, but we all pay them by the personalize data we input individually.

As we use social media for our personal or career purposes over the months and years we make a unique path which is consists of who we connected with, what have we share, what is our interests, hobbies, age, place of living and other activities. This uniqueness is treated as a product wich can be sold to other commercial organizations or can be targeted for advertisement [1].

Social media companies such as Facebook analyse billions of these unique load of data that is gathered from every individual, to spot any trend into the analysed data and react to it based on their own advantages, such as targeted advertisement to every single user based on their interests and experiences [1].

Data also collected using cookies. Cookies are data that are saved locally in the users device, and they are used for smart browsing.

The main discussion for this topic is the significant bounce effect of these data gathering to the users who provided these mass data. The main advantages it brings to the users is that it enables them to be known online, users see only adverts that they interested in, individual can be targeted for recruitment by organisations, also it provides smart browsing which saves users a lot of time.

Despite that it has many advantages to the user, it has also raised the issue of exceeding the users privacy, many of us don’t agree for our data to be used by third party organizations, however social media sites such as Facebook do sell our personalized data to other companies without even many of us being aware of. Until a couple of years ago websites also used to access users cookies without their permission, however since then cookies law invented to make users aware that their data (cookies) being accessed [2].

Topic 3: Reflective Summary

Before the approach of topic three I believed that a good tailored CV and presenting yourself professionally to the employer in the job interview will make you stand out from the crow. However after I read other students posts and did my own research in regards to how to develop your professional online profile, I learned how important and effective it is to have your online profile presented professionally for the sector your seeking to be employed. I was amazed by the statistical facts people have referenced about percentage of employer as high as 76% are using social medias specifically Linked-In, to recruit people. This inspired me to create my own Linked-In account today and start having professional online profile.

I really enjoyed reading Andrew Ghiacy’s post. He opened a really good discussion about the topic, and included some really useful tips on how to build a professional online profile, however one of his tips didn’t convince me, where he mention to make obscure identities for the things that are not relevant to professional life. I didn’t agree because I think no matter what we do on the web, we leave an online footprint, which can be traced, therefore I say keep everything professional.

Zia also made a remarkable explanation about the importance of having Linked-In profile. I learned about the differences between social network and professional network, which covers from academic life to experiences and achievements. He also included some very helpful bullet points about how to create a professional online profile, however it would have been even better if he included the things we should avoid in order to gain proficiency for our online profiles. E.g. removing any drunken or violent images from our social network posts or highly privatise them. Overall topic three has been a very interesting and knowledgeable topic as I have learned a lot from it.

Topic 3: How do I dress myself professionally online?

We have all learned that when we are invited to a job interview we try our best to dress smart and professional, as well as talking professionally including body language. We also try our best in order to behave and keep our communication focused on the field that we are interested to be employed. Nowadays according 2014 social recruiting survey results [1], 73% of employees get recruited through social media. I am sure this ring the bells on how important it is to keep our online profile professional. Recruiting process is now really competitive and people are not only employed simply by their CV being reviewed, employers also search for candidates’ online presence and how professional their online identities are kept including how focused their virtual life are to the field of interested employment. Therefore it is crucial to keep our online presence as professional as our CV or a job interview preparation.

Since we understood the importance of our online professional profile, I am going to discuss how to achieve this goal. The following are tips for how to presents yourself professionally online, so that you can sell yourself good when it comes to online recruitment:

  • As argued on topic 2 it is very beneficially to have multiple online identities, separating private life from professional/business life. This gives as the control over our personal blogs and files that we share with our family to not effect our career life.
  • Google yourself to see what you have left behind online, and put yourself in the shoes of an employer so that you can decide if your online profile can convince a recruiter.
  • Any violent, sexual, or racism posts or comments and images should be removed or highly personalized, so that they are only shared with those that you want.
  • According Lissa Harris blog [2], 94% of all recruiters use LinkedIn to search for candidates. So it is really recommended to develop a professional LinkedIn profile. Also making sure all our other profiles such as Facebook and twitter, including personal website (if any) all linked in together, and the same profile image is used on all of them.
  • Making sure that all work experience, volunteer working and blogs are included in our profile in order to show creativity and talents.

One of my friends is working as a recruiter in a firm, and he advised me to target a sector that I want to be employed, and accordingly present myself online.
